Opportunity Information: Apply for P24AS00178

The 2024 Preservation Technology and Training (PTT) Grants are a National Park Service funding opportunity administered by the National Center for Preservation Technology and Training (NCPTT), which serves as the NPS innovation hub for the preservation field. The program is designed to push preservation practice forward by supporting projects that create better tools, materials, and methods for conserving historic buildings, cultural landscapes, and other cultural resources. A central expectation is that proposed work is genuinely innovative, not simply a continuation of routine practice, and that the results are shared broadly so they can influence preservation work at the national, regional, and/or local level.

For 2024, NCPTT will consider all innovative preservation-technology proposals, but it is placing particular emphasis on three priority themes. The first is the use of augmented reality and machine learning to develop new approaches for cultural resource work, reflecting growing interest in advanced visualization, interpretation, analysis, and decision support tools. The second priority focuses on climate change response, especially projects addressing fire-related impacts and inland hydrological challenges such as flooding, drought, and shifting water regimes that threaten cultural resources. The third priority encourages proposals that apply new techniques and technologies that originate from, are led by, or are meaningfully developed in partnership with descendant communities and other underrepresented communities, with the goal of expanding whose knowledge and methods shape preservation technology.

The program also includes specific guidance about what NCPTT considers innovative in certain common project types. For digital documentation of buildings or landscapes, basic scanning or straightforward capture of a resource is not enough; projects must advance how documentation is conducted, analyzed, processed, or shared, such as developing new workflows, analytical methods, dissemination platforms, or novel uses of the resulting data. For symposia, conferences, and training activities, applicants must plan for distribution of the content beyond the people who attend the event, ensuring the value reaches a wider audience. For media products like podcasts and webinars, because the funding is federal, NCPTT expects those materials to be made available for publication on NCPTT's website so they can be shared as broadly as possible.

PTT Grants generally support three main categories of activities. First, they fund innovative research that develops new technologies or adapts existing technologies to preserve cultural resources, with awards typically around $20,000 (and an award ceiling of $20,000 listed for this opportunity). Second, they support specialized workshops or symposia that identify and address national preservation needs, typically in the $5,000 to $15,000 range. Third, they fund practical dissemination products such as how-to videos, podcasts, best-practices publications, and webinars that provide tools and methods preservation professionals can use, also typically supported at $5,000 to $15,000.

The program is clear about what it will not fund. It does not provide "brick and mortar" support, meaning it is not intended for direct construction, repair, or capital improvement work on historic resources. It also will not fund publications intended to be sold for profit during the grant period, trainings that generate income for the applicant, or projects centered on routine or well-established technologies that do not represent an innovative advance for the field.

Eligibility is broad across the preservation, research, and education landscape and includes entities such as federal and non-federal laboratories, accredited museums, universities, nonprofit organizations, National Park System units and offices (including Cooperative Park Study Units), State Historic Preservation Offices, Tribal Preservation Offices, and Native Hawaiian organizations. The opportunity also lists eligible applicant types such as state governments, public and private institutions of higher education, federally recognized tribal governments, and both 501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3) nonprofits. The grant is a discretionary program administered by the National Park Service under CFDA 15.923, with an original closing date of February 5, 2024, and an opportunity number of P24AS00178.
